Whenever a coach contacts either Mike Tillman or me with a rules clarification we confer and then make a ruling. Our ruling is that the author's point of view is intregal to the perspective of the reader\/listener. It defines the narrative persona (voice) through which the narrative is expressed. It is our opinion that changing a selection from third to first person (or changing the identity of any character, whether within or outside the plotline itself) violates both the letter and the spirit of the rule that says: "Because contestants in interpretive events present the published and copyrighted work of other writers, it is not acceptable to add to, "update" or modify the original publication's language except in the case of "cutting" language for time, community standards\/objectionable language, or "tag line" consideration." Erin, the key is to not change the intent of the author. The Board approved both of these changes and they are in effect for this season. The first is the disqualification rule. Changes were made so every rule violation did not result in an automatic disqualification. For example, if a student were to have a time violation, instead of being taken out of the competition, his\/her score would be altered to be the lowest score in that round. If there were 6 in the round and he\/she received the 1, he\/she would receive the 6, the 2 would move to 1, the 3 to 2, etc. It would still be possible for a student to qualify for finals. The High School League sent out notice for both these changes to every school in the state. If you have not seen it, talk to your AD to get the information. It's important everyone know which violations result in disqualification and which result in receiving the lowest score in the round. (If you get a chance, thank Tracy Steiner from JCC for all his work and insight into this rule change.
\nThe other change is a procedural change in the way the tabulating is done at the state tournament. At the state tournament preliminary ranks will be used to determine finalists in the final round. They will not be used after that!! Only final round ranks will be used to determine final placement at the state tournament. Every section in the state has the opportunity to adopt this method of tabulation or may continue as they have done in the past. I would be in favor of continuing status quo in our region because we do count preliminary ranks in the final placement, but give them no more than one judge in the final round. Instead of counting all 5 judges equally, we count the three that all finalists have and count the preliminary judges as one judge. Just a thought, but we should make some sort of decision on how we want to proceed with tabbing the section tournament. I don't think we want to make that decision at our meeting at the region tournament during the second round of competition.
